This is a hardback copy of "Mountain Midsummer: Climbing in Four Continents" by Michael Gill; published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1969 [pp. 220].

This copy is in excellent unmarked condition, please note top left edge front dustjacket has small tear (see photo). 14.5cm x 22cm.

"I have an ape-like build peculiarly suited to climbing" wrote Michael Gill. Sir Edmund Hillary, to whom the letter was addressed, was intrigued. He suggested an interview and as a result Michael Gill joined the 1960 Himalayan Expedition and several others in the years to come.

Although he was fascinated by the Himalayas and the people who lived there, his great love was for a little-known New Zealand range, the Darrans. While a medical student he ventured again and again into those remote and beautiful mountains, finding amongst their rock walls, their ice-falls and forest the adventure he longed for. The story of his climbing on these peaks makes exciting reading and later he moves abroad, to North Wales, France, Nepal and the Antarctic.

The style is laconic, spiced with a sense of humour, but where the occasion demands, as in the epic ascent of Mt Whitcombe, Michael Gill writes with a conviction that places this among the best of mountaineering books. Why do men climb mountains? This book gives one man's answer to that puzzling question.
