Description
A Hundred Year History of the P. & O.
Boyd Cable
The centenary history of one of the most celebrated shipping companies in the world, from P&O's inception - the year Queen Victoria came to the throne - to just before the Second World War when they owned one of the largest and finest fleets of passenger liners and cargo steamers afloat. The author describes P & O's early history, their first steamers and packet-ships serving the Far East, and the first contract of 1837. He continues with an account of the early steamers to India, the overland route, the first cruising voyages (as early as 1844), the first Australian mail steamers, and the opening of the Suez Canal. There is also an account of P & O's Jubilee, its epic war record 1914-1918, and the fleet development during the 1920's and 1930's. The book is illustrated with a number of fine coloured plates plus photographs and silhouettes of every vessel from 1837 to 1937 accompanying a detailed Fleet List. 289 pages hardback Published by Nicholson & Watson (1937) 242mm x 180mm
