Description
A CENTURY OF STYLE Great Ships of the Union Line 1875-1976 N.H. Brewer
A.H. & A.W. Reed, Wellington, 1982.
Hardback with dust jacket. 238 pages.
Some tiny chips at edges of dust jacket, otherwise excellent condition.
From 1875 onwards the ships of the Union Steamship Company were regarded as "Queens of the Seas." They offered passengers excellent service in accommodation, entertainment and cuisine. This book features 36 of these ships.
It examines the passenger ships that linked New Zealand with Australia, the Pacific Islands and, at times, North America for a century as well as NZ ports coast-wise.
Many of the company's ships were household names throughout NZ as they were often the mainstay of travel. Brewer has selected 37 ships for inclusion and the text for each is accompanied by a photograph and in some case several internal pictures or images related to the vessel.
Each account describes the ship, its service with the company, details of incidents or interesting events in its career and its eventual fate. A fleet list of the company's passenger ships (Appendix II) gives technical details and statistics.
