DESCRIPTION: The decade of the 1950s was a time of transition for the railways of N, especially in the North Island. Apart from the replacement of steam locomotives by diesel and electric motive power, new technologies and methods of track maintenance were beginning to have an impact on the methods of the past. Industrial railways serving sawmills and coal mines were also in a period of decline, especially the bush tramways. Most of the author's 150 photographs in this book show steam in harness,not so much because of this photographers love of the steam locomotive, but because in the 1950s that's the way it was. This album is simply a volume depicting a time of transition from the old to the new.
