The Story of Union Pacific’s 3 Cylinder Power
The Union Pacific's obsession with three cylinder locomotion in the 1920s was driven by long standing relationships between the road and the builder, American Locomotive Company (Alco).
The basic principle was sound and prior experience in Europe of the design led Alco to advance the theory in the United States.
The unique Union Pacific type has been amply recorded on film in the many rail related publications but the full story from inception to retirement has not been told until Volumes I and II of this book.
Admired by some, literally hated by others in Union Pacific authority, the type was the finite example of pushing a theory to the limit in clearances and other mechanical restrictions incurred on a railroad.
Within these covers comes alive the "in house" story of design, fabrication, modification and operation of these eighty-eight machines which lasted on the roster virtually until the end of Union Pacific steam power operation.
