Pulitzer Prize-winning American author Stanley Karnow in this monumental narrative clarifies, analyses and demystifies the terrible ordeal of the unpopular, unwinnable Vietnam War.

Free of ideological bias, profound in its understanding and compassionate in its portrayal of humanity, it is filled with fresh revelations drawn from secret documents.

And there are exclusive interviews with the participants - French, American, Vietnamese, Chinese: diplomats, military commanders, high government officials, journalists, nurses, workers and soldiers.

These are the people who shaped strategy and who suffered, died or survived as a result.

Throughout, Karnow focuses on people: his book opens with the deaths of the first GIs in Vietnam and it ends with the reminiscence of the Communist officer who accepted the surrender of the South Vietnamese regime in 1975.

The Vietnam War was the most convulsive tragedy of recent times. This is its definitive history.

Karnow was a World War II veteran who graduated from Harvard and began his journalism career in the early 1950s. He is probably best known for his coverage of the Vietnam War.

He began his journalistic career in Paris in 1950 as a Time correspondent. He went to Asia for Time and Life in 1959 and subsequently reported from there for The Washington Post. He was a correspondent for the Saturday Evening Post, the London Observer and NBC News.

Vietnam: A History by Stanley Karnow is a first edition published in 1983 by Century Publishing, London.

Subtitled The First Complete Account of Vietnam at War, it is a massive 750-page 16.5x24cm hard cover with battered dust jacket but otherwise tight and sound.

The bottom right of the front hard cover has had a knock at some time.

There are fascinating photographs scattered throughout.
