This hard back book of 176 pages, " Strange Soldiering " was written by Richard Lawson and published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1963 as a 1st Edition. 14 x 21 cms ; age/edgewear to dust jacket ; some aging ; pages clean & intact ; early photographs ; good condition.

Since the strange soldiering of Major Lawson was wildly and heroically adventurous, this is a true adventure story. Because the duties imposed on the author and his colleagues in the chaos of the newly-liberated Congo may in the next few years face others in similarly liberated parts of Africa, the book is about the future as well as the past.

It does not in any way deal with politics, but with the ordinary people whom world statesmen sometimes forget. In the Congo there were nearly as many armies as there were political parties ; none were controlled, all were mutinous. Ragged groups of troops murdering each other, murdering civilians and murdering those U.N.O doctors and officials who were attempting to help them, ranged through the country lacking any central authority, any police or any public services.

Their one aim was to seize, and then destroy for lack of either fuel or knowledge, all transport and medical supplies, and to terrorise a population who had no leaders, no redress, and finally, no food.

It was the duty of Major Lawson and his colleagues in the U.N.O. force to which he was attached, to bring peace to such a country and to deal, themselves unarmed and often single-handed, with these terrorists. That he and his colleagues succeeded is not only remarkable, but is a pointer for the future. How Major Lawson himself succeeded provides one of the most exciting stories of our time.

This book gives a realistic and graphic account of the situation, as they found it, in the Congo.
