Description
Spreading Their Wings New Zealand WAAFs in Wartime Bee Dawson PB medium Size 2004 First Edition 207 pages brilliant overall used condition, although cover slight rubbed, marked, bumped shelf wear, secondhand book, this is a carefully selected pre-loved book. Awesome war history here, insightful, extremely informative covering wide range & variety accounts & stories of the lives & wartime experiences of 30 New Zealand women who joined the NZ Women's Auxiliary Air Force. At the beginning of WWII 1939 the idea of women working in the Armed Forces was considered quite radical, in spite of a long tradition of Army nurses. The first women of the WAAF were greeted with opposition & disapproval but by the end of the war they had become respected members of the Armed Forces. Most WAAFs began serving in support roles, but as the war progressed increasing numbers were trained to do 'men's jobs' such as instrument repair or armoury instruction. Many WAAF's lacked formal education & often knew little about 'the facts of life'. They joined as girls & demobbed as mature women, tempered by war, the loss of loved ones & a world forever changed. Drawing strength from each other & friendships have survived post-war decades. Bee's interviews with the pioneering women reveal diverse range of experiences from sighting of Japanese spy plane to plane crash, to living in huts so cold lipsticks froze....& lots more,
