Description

In 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt told Averell Harriman: "I want you to go over to London and recommend everything that we can do, short of war, to keep the British Isles afloat".

This book, drawn from Harriman's voluminous notes and records, shows new light on the major personalities of those momentous years. Its many new stories of Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, and all the war-time leaders, give the reader a ringside seat while history was being made.

With this work, the last of the major participants in World War II strategy at the highest level finally tells his story. Harriman (1891-1986) was a long-time adviser to Democratic administrations.

During the war he served Roosevelt as special envoy to Europe and was US ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1943-46.

He also served as ambassador to Great Britain for five months in 1946, was Secretary of Commerce from 1946-1948, and 48th Governor of New York from 1955-58.

After serving as Secretary of Commerce, he was in 1948 appointed US representative abroad for the European Recovery Program and later director of the Mutual Security Agency.

He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1956. Defeated for re-election in New York in 1958 by Nelson A Rockefeller, he became in 1961 President John F Kennedy's special roving ambassador. He was Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs and ambassador-at-large for President Lyndon B Johnson.

In 1968, when the Paris peace talks on Vietnam opened, he was chief US negotiator.

Co-author Elie Abel (1920-2004) was a Canadian-Amercan journalist best remembered for his time as a diplomatic correspondent for NBC News from 1961-1970.

Special Envoy to Churchill and Stalin 1941-1946 by W Averell Harriman and Elie Abel is a 1976 first edition published by Hutchison & Co, London.
