from d/j: J H E Schroder has long figured in New Zealand life: as a school teacher; as an academic administrator on the Council of Canterbury's University and finally as its chairman; on the Senate of the University of New Zealand; as a member of The National Commission for UNESCO; as an editorial journalist, first on THE SUN and then on THE PRESS, Christchurch; first as Assistant Director of Broadcasting, then as Director, under whom television was introduced. In these latter capacities he studiously avoided the microphone; but when he retired he accepted the invitation to fill the place left vacant by Professor Arnold Wall and for four years broadcast a series of talks on "WORDS AND THEIR WAYS". These established a national audience and involved him in an enormous but enjoyable and profitable correspondence. The scripts of the first three years of these broadcasts have been rearranged and revised for this book, which preserves their substance and, so far as possible, their informal style. Throughout this various career, Mr Schroder has remained a writer, as his four books before this testify, two of prose pieces, two of verse; and the wit and humour of all are his own and memorably so.
