No Ordinary Woman: Ria Bancroft - Sculptor
By Peb Simmons
This is the remarkable and moving story of Ria Bancroft, an English artist who worked in Canada and travelled and worked in Italy before settling in New Zealand in 1962.
The story of Ria's life is told in four parts, covering the four countries in which she lived - England, where she first produced popular ceramic' figures for sale; Canada, where she worked for a company making large display figures for stores and parades; Italy, where she absorbed the artworks and atmosphere, and gained much inspiration; and New Zealand, where her work as an artist matured and most of her major works were produced.
This biography also brings together images displaying Ria Bancroft's sculptural genius in such diverse works as public commissions for government, private commissions for business and personal sculpture. Yet No Ordinary Woman is not only about the inspiration and work of an exceptional artist, it is also about a life of courage and vision, about creating and attaining a dream.
