Figure in the New Zealand Landscape By Victoria Ginn
Introduction:
Composed in the mid- late 1970's early 80's, at a time when a preponderant conservatism still enveloped the nation's soul, 'Figure in the New Zealand Landscape' is a series of photographs which lead the eye through the New Zealand countryside and the human heart in a poetic exploration of the symbolic, aesthetic, erotic, sensual, contradictory and humorous interplay between Self and Nature, via the juxtaposition of the human form and landscape. Mischievous, serious, satirical and oft-times cheeky, the images roam through the sun-fired sands of the golden dunes at Cape Reinga in the far reaches of the North Island; the cold grey ice of ancient glaciers spilling through sculptured thighs of frozen stone in the far south of the South island; naked bodies wrapped in the open spaces of mountain, field and ocean beach; to the clothed expression of interior emotions spinning abstractly upon the colours of the earth.
The images are loosely arranged into four chapters: Earth n Sky, Wood n Tree, Rock n Water, Sea n Sand. This arrangement is as much about the poetic message inherent in an image as it is about the physical place and visual format.
Included in the study are such original and innovative performance artists, dancers and choreographers.
