Kaumatua: Ano te Ataahua
Editor Elizabeth Kerekere

Honouring the Gifts of our Elders

Kaumatua is a celebration of the significant contributions Maori elders throughout Aotearoa New Zealand have made to their communities. The kaumatua tell us their life stories in ways that are sometimes poignant but always moving. Rich in human detail, their lives are set against the social and political background of the 20th century, but their experiences were also heavily influenced by the 19th century. They speak of Kingitanga and being educated at Native Schools. Some grew up speaking te reo Maori in the home, while others were actively discouraged from learning it, gaining their knowledge of Maoritanga late in life. For a few, their early years were literally lived between two worlds - Pakeha and Maori.

They all share certain common experiences - childhoods spent living simply off the land, the importance of religion in their lives, and decades of hard work. And they continue to work for the health and welfare of their whanau and communities.

The Maori passages of text are a special feature of this book. Dialectal differences are evident, as most of the kaumatua who are fluent in te reo Maori learnt their language at home and on the marae early in the 20th century. This is not the generic Maori as it is taught today in schools and at universities.
