'This new historical study reveals the hidden patronage and interlocking political, business and family interests behind the construction of Wellington's iconic cablecar, the development of the suburb of Kelburn and the establishment and location therein, of the new Victoria University. Making use of original archives, including some previously unknown sources the author exposes the previously unknown secret links between Seddon's Liberal government and a small coterie of West Coast business friends. These men, all Irish and all ex-goldminers, had developed a strong commercial network on the Coast. They then moved their multifarious operations to Wellington, where they became closely identified with the liquor trade, as both brewers and hotel owners. They became known as the "Kelly Gang".
