Typeset and printed by the University of Otago Printing Department. Reproductions of the Coxhead brothers' 19th century photographs, mostly of Dunedin, but also includes photographs of Purakanui, Taiaroa Heads Lighthouse; Queenstown, Milford; Sutherland Falls; Preservation Inlet. Also includes reproductions of the fourteen photographs in Frank Coxhead's Album of Dunedin in 1860, which were reproduced in 1883 by Frank Coxhead from "the original plates taken by William Meluish". The 14 photographs from the 1860 Album of Dunedin are laser printed on off-white / pale yellow paper. Includes a biographical / historical essay on the Coxhead brothers and their work as photographers, informative captions to all of the illustrations, a half-page Bibliography, and an Appendix - "Key to the numbers Frank Coxhead printed on the photographs of the early 1860s which he published in 1883." "There is no reason why we should not speak of a New Zealand photography as confidently of identifying something that went to the making of New Zealand, illuminating its cultural patterns and the lives of the people, as some American photo-historians do in their studies of their national photography from the time of Matthew Brady." - page xvi.
