'This collection of photographs depicts examples of the variety of buildings constructed for recreational, educational, business and private use in the Porirua area over the last 120 years. few of these buildings now survive as most were built of wood and therefore were highly susceptible to destruction by fire. Many of those structures built of more solid materials such as the original Porirua Asylum, were rendered unsafe by earthquakes. Others have been demolished during the rapid development of Porirua in the last 40 years.
