Introduction- 'The earliest research in New Zealand concerning Thomas Hansen can be traced back to 1938-39 when the late Karl Hansen, a Northland school teacher, attempted to compile a family tree in time for Auckland's 1940 Centennial celebration. The work was barely started when W.W.2 broke out which put a stop to the project. .... This journey has led me down a long path stretching into four decades during which I have never lost interest in finding out as much as possible about this unique Hansen family which became the first, European family to settle permanently in New Zealand. The creator of this dynasty was Thomas Hansen whose maritime career is the subject of this booklet. During his 14 year employment with the New South wales Colonial Government service, mainly transporting prisoners and stores to the various settlements, he had command of two of their more prominent ships, both associated with voyages of discovery and exploration around Australia. Prior to this stage of his life, Captain Hansen had sailed the brig Active into New Zealand history by taking Samuel Marsden and his missionaries to the Bay of islands in 1814'
