Forty Mile Bush: A tribute to pioneers By C.J. Carle
Contains numerous photos throughout.
Preface:
"Forty Mile Bush" is a worthy successor to earlier records of district history and marks the completion of almost a life-time of study of the Wairarapa. Pahiatua, as the capital of the Bush district and the centre of a land of plenty and promise has been featured to mark the Centenary in February, 1981. Tribute is paid to the courage and perseverance of the sturdy pioneers who took up the challenge of the bush and came hither to lay the foundations of this most fortunate settlement. Nature has indeed been generous in her contribution to make this land a haunt of ancient peace. It was a land worth winning and Nature saw to it that the spirit of the early settlers was tried in the struggle against dangers, difficulties and privation. Theirs was the spirit of independence and honest endeavour. Having subdued the soil they planted here the institutions they cherished most in the land that gave them birth.
"Forty Mile Bush" is a tribute to its pioneers those men and women who had the courage, endurance and fortitude to enter its daunting portals of forest giants and to all who mastered adversity and determined its development.
This publication marks the Centenary of Pahiatua on February 28, 1981 and is a record of district endeavour.
