The Malvern area takes its name from the foothills at the base of the Torlesse Range, the namesake of which was taken from the Malvern Hills area in the Worcestershire county of England. Malvern County Council was amalgamated with the Ellesmere and Paparua county councils to form Selwyn District Council in October 1989.
The largest town is Darfield with about 3000 people.
