Description
In Oblong Softcovers, First edition 1987, Black and White photographs, illustrations, maps, 102 Pages, Published By Murchisan District Historical & Museum Society (inc) Murchison. A Near Fine Copy. SCARCE. 'Nowadays there is a pleasant picnic and caravan park by the side of the Buller River. once there was a thriving gold town there. No evidence of it remains. It was perched precariously on the hillside in heavily bushed country with no roads and the turbulent river at first its only means of transport. Here lived hundreds of miners with their gallant wives and children. here were shops, hotels, a courthouse, brewery and newspaper office on the one street cut from the cliff, while up the steep hill were the claims and later small satellite townships. Unlike most towns that depended on gold alone, it existed for some eighty years and was an identity for another fifty until fire removed the last visible link with the past. This book tells some of its story in words and pictures'
