Description
Duperrey's Visit to New Zealand in 1824. Edited Andrew Sharp. 1971 1st edition. Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington
Louis Isidor Duperrey was the Captain of La Coqille, a French naval ship, which visited the Bay of Islands from 3 to 17 April 1824 as part of a circumnavigation of the globe to study natural history and native peoples Here translations of his writings along with those of Dumont D’Urville (second in command) and two others aboard describe life in New Zealand , both Maori and Pakeha, at the time. One of the writers, a naval doctor and naturalist, describes D’Urville, both physically and in temperament. He also talks of Maori customs and dress; the killing of Marion du Fresne; dwellings; ship girls; Missionaries; and birds amongst other things The fourth writer, Jules Alphonse Rene Porret de Blosseville talks of a visit to various villages which included Kerikeri, Paihia and Kororareka; and mentions early Missionaries
The ship La La Coqille was later renamed L’Astrolabe and revisted the Bay of Islands a few years later under the command of Dumont D’Urville
A folding map shows the area as we know it and another gives Duperrey’s chart of the Bay of Islands
