The book covers 31 disasters with accompanying photos, narrating catastrophes not included in Eugene Grayland's first book published in 1957, and fully covering those that occurred over the next twenty years.

These include: the ruinous North Island floods of 1958; the Northland cyclone of 1959; the Brynderwyn bus tragedy and the Kaimai air crash of 1963; the mysterious disappearance of the collier 'Kaitawa' in 1966; the Strongman mine explosion of 1967; Cyclone Giselle, the foundering of the 'Wahine' and the Inangahua earthquake, 1968; the Kaimai tunnel collapse, 1970; and the Parnell fumes emergency of 1973.
