These include: the ruinous North Island floods of 1958; the Northland cyclone of 1959; the Brynderwyn bus tragedy and the Kaimai air crash of 1963; the mysterious disappearance of the collier 'Kaitawa' in 1966; the Strongman mine explosion of 1967; Cyclone Giselle, the foundering of the 'Wahine' and the Inangahua earthquake, 1968; the Kaimai tunnel collapse, 1970; and the Parnell fumes emergency of 1973.
