by Winsome Shepherd

This book provides the first published reference on the subject. Readers will be surprised at the richness of this little known part of our heritage, which had its origin in the late 1800s. Immigrant artisans from Britain and Europe were quick to introduce the special character of their new country into their work, especially in the field of engraving and the use of pounamu or New Zealand jade.

As the nineteenth century progressed, locally trained artisans emerged and from the illustrations the reader can follow the continuing development of precious metal-work in this country through to the present. A wide range of items made by New Zealand's workers in precious metals is featured - testimonial pieces, religious and domestic ware, Masonic jewels, medals and personal jewellery. Over 100 makers' marks are reproduced.
