Description
TAWA FLAT AND THE OLD PORIRUA ROAD 1840 - 1982
by Arthur H Carman
Although it is concerned with an area not more 12 miles square, this book is an important local history, as this district from its location has always been a vital link in the line of communication between Wellington and the north. Beginning at the very foundation of European settlement at Wellington, when dense forest covered the whole of this territory, the author carries the reader through the gradual transformation to the present day modern township. This is not so much a story, as a history, a gathering together of historical notes, writings, verbal information, and reminiscence, all relating to the old Porirua Road district. But for those who will read what is here presented there is romance, there is tragedy, there is drama, and comedy, but primarily there is fact.
There is a full record of the families who settled the district, and indeed, one suggested title for this book was "The Doomsday Book of Tawa Flat", indicating the detailed manner in which the pioneers are recorded.
First published by the author Arthur H Carman in 1956, this is the republished (with additions) 1982 edition
