IN THE HILLS OF THE WAIMARINO - THE HUMAN STORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DISTRICT

by Elizabeth C. Allen of Raetihi

Prior ro the last decade of the nineteenth century the King Country, or King's Country, was closed territory as far as settlements by Europeans was concerned, and the present Waimarino County which forms its southern portion was clothed almost entirely in heavy rain-forest. This book tells the story of the people who, from 1893 onwards, cleared those mighty trees to carve out farms for themselves and their families on their own small allocations of land - pioneer farmers whose only capital was their determination to succeed and their tremendous capacity for hard and unremitting toil. They were special sort of people and the success achieved by their first and second generations can be seen today in the smiling farmlands and the healthy high-country stock which are a feature of the district.

'In the Hills of the Waimarino: is not a history as such, but rather it is an essentially human story from people whose lives are interwoven with the development of the district. They are descendants of the pioneers of the Waimarino, not the ones who gave up and departed when the going became tough, but those who took up their land in bush in the early days and just 'kept on keeping on'.
