Women With a Cause
by W.B.Sutch
New Zealand University Press
1973 (1st)
Softcover (23.5x15.5cms), 248pp

A 1973 history of gender equality / inequality in New Zealand written by a controversial figure - Dr. W.B. Sutch - who was New Zealand's representative on the United Nations and head of the Department of Industries and Commerce, as well as serving as a Director of the Reserve Bank. In 1933 he had been recruited to the 'Brains Trust' who advised the Minister of Finance, Gordon Coates. He also worked closely with Walter Nash from 1935.

Written in 12 chapters, each reading as a story in itself, the book makes a case for a massive shift in attitudes, and point the ways by which discrimination against women could be eliminated. Sutch believed that New Zealand men had been conditioned to a role of arrogant domination, and women to submission, resulting in a lack of freedom for either gender.

A year after the publication of this book, Sutch was arrested on spy charges after alleged clandestine meetings with a Russian diplomat. He was acquitted after five-day trial in February 1975 but died later that year, perhaps as an indirect consequence of his ordeal. Speculation continues to this day as to whether he was a spy or not.

Good minus condition, with discoloration and fading from sunning, edgewear to cover and spine, and detachment of the first 3cm of the front cover from spine at top join. Some of the gutters are cracked/unglued, example shown. Some foxing to endpages only, bumping to corners. Pages clean and unmarked.
