Triumph: The Ship that Hit the Lighthouse By David Johnson

This story is an accident, the result of wandering down an interesting and irresistible byway while ostensibly engaged on other matters.
The principal matter was the pursuit of the species "Victorian colonial entrepreneur", epitomised in this case by C.W. Turner, merchant, of Christchurch. The pursuit faltered briefly when Turner's charter of the Triumph was discovered, and halted completely when the Triumph's jousting with Tiritiri light was realised.
When it was found that many of the contemporary, and all of the later accounts of the mishap, had achieved the doubtful accuracy of fables, it was no longer possible to ignore the event. So, with perhaps an apology for not letting sleeping dogs lie and tall stories retain their reputation, here is the story of the Triumph and of her master, based on facts, facts and nothing but the facts.
