‘Really, any one does not need to have too tender a heart out here. It’s very hard sometimes to see the rough and hurried care some living man has bestowed on his dead comrades. One grave l remember well had a rough cross worked in bits of rock on the top of it and a bit of biscuit box with a few lines on it in pencil. “In memory of so and so of the Devons. Killed in action on such and such a day 1901. ‘God is love’.” All this in a rough scrawl but it tells its own tale. In April 1901, within days of his 19th birthday, Harry Gilbert joined the 7th Canterbury Mounted Ri?es and set off to ?ght the Boers in South Africa. Although he was away for not much more than a year, during that time Harry wrote more than 30 letters home. Amazingly, most of these letters have survived to the present day and are presented here in this poignant account of a young man’s introduction to the terrible consequences of war. Trooper Harry Gilbert’s letters were sometimes staunch, often harrowing and on occasion even humorous, but always with the power to reach out even after all these years to remind us not only of the human cost to those who served, but also of their humanity and spirit. A journalist with more than 40 years’ experience and author of two previous books, both memoirs of prominent New Zealand hunters, Kingsley Field currently runs a media consultancy business in Hamilton.
