The series of thirty-nine William books by Richmal Crompton were written over a period of fifty years, 1921 to 1970 (Richmal Crompton died in 1969). Describing the adventures of mischievous schoolboy William Brown, each book is a collection of short stories. In the books, William remains aged 11 years, despite the action of each book being set in the era in which it was written. William often gets into trouble and is the leader of his band of friends, The Outlaws, with his best friend Ginger, other friends Henry and Douglas and scruffy mongrel called Jumble. Numerous television, film, radio and theatre productions have been inspired by the William series of books which have a large following of fans who interact through groups such as the Just William Society http://www.justwilliamsociety.co.uk/ which is open to all William admirers, young and old, from around the world. Membership is free for all junior members up to 15 years of age.
