IDEALS began in 1944 with a Christmas issue printed by Van B. Hooper, a public relations manager for a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, manufacturer. The magazine, which had started as bits and pieces of poetry and homey philosophy added to his company’s newsletter, struck a chord in its readers. Circulation grew through word of mouth, and at the magazine’s height, eight issues a year were published with various themes. Today, more than 70 years later, Ideals is still treasured by families who believe that no matter how times change, the vital things—family ties, love of country, and faith in God—are what see us through.
