Description
This is a copy of the famous Victorian poetry anthology The Golden Treasury, edited by Francis Palgrave — made special by the wonderful illustrations of Maxfield Parrish. Published by T. Werner Laurie, no date, but c. 1911.
Contains 8 full-page colour plates, with tissue guards. Also decorative endpapers designed by Parrish.
Parrish was an American illustrator "known for his distinctive saturated hues and idealized neo-classical imagery”. One illustration website describes his typical work in rather over-the-top fashion thus: "His idealized images with figures of feminine pulchritude adorned in classical gowns with backgrounds of electric violets, radiant reds and rich glowing earth tone pigments, created an idyllic world indeed. Other images had scenes embellished with billowing clouds in a fairy tale ambience of maidens and knights lying under porticoes and these were equally harmonic, idealistic, and beloved.”
25 x 20cm approx. Colour plate pasted to front board, a few marks to boards but generally good. The inner hinges are a little weak (front hinge splitting) and the boards slightly loose. Internally in very good condition.
