by G.K. Chesterton

Methuen, London

1928 Seventeenth edition

Small hardcover, 17.5x11.5cms, 216pp plus catalogue of Methuen publications.

A famous analysis of Dickens in which Chesterton compares the immense achievements produced by the optimism of the great writer to the small results produced by the pessimistic methods of later days. Chapters cover the life periods of Dickens, his affiliations with America and Christmas, his great works and characters, his later works, and the alleged optimism of Dickens.

Pages from full title page to p22 are almost full detached as a block (only bound by 4 threads) - see photo. Nice red boards, gilt embossed facsimile of Chesterton's signature on front board. Spine text also bright. Former owners name and price notation on FFEP. Scattered foxing otherwise the rough-cut pages are clean and bright. Light bumping.

The wrapper (quite rare to find with this edition) is in reasonable condition, some soiling to spine and edgewear / chipping.
