Description
Pennant, Thomas:
Some Account of London.
Published by J Faulder et al, London 1813. The Fifth edition, with considerable additions.
Hardcover, viii, and 660pp. With 15 engraved plates (all present), 2 of them being fold-outs (frontispiece is a folding view of London in 1563, and there is a fold-out of London during the Great Fire in 1666).
The engraving of London in 1563 is 54cm x 22cm in size and didn't quite fit on my scanner. It starts on the left with St James Park and Charing Cross and finishes on the right with the Tower of London and St Katherine's church. At the bottom it shows Shakespeare's Play House (The Globe theatre)
Some early history of London but mostly an account of buildings present and past, monuments, and the history and people associated with them. With appendices, including causes of death in 1790-1.
Fair condition overall. Covers are poor, with spine missing and replaced with old cellotape. There is also tape on the margin of the title page. The binding is quite sound. Some browning and foxing on pages and plates. This book is a suitable candidate for rebinding.
