A natural resin secreted by tiny insects which live on the Lac Trees of India and Thailand. This resin forms a protective covering for the Lac insects and their eggs. These minute insects form a colony of such vast numbers that the Lac shell can cover virtually the whole tree. Once the eggs have hatched, and the new insects moved on, the raw Lac is harvested. This "Stick-Lac" is then filtered and refined to form the wafer-thin sheet we know as Shellac Flakes.

Uses: Antique restoration, tannin, odour and stain blocker.

Uses of Shellac

French Polishing: Standard mix is called a 3lb cut. Mix 150gms of Shellac Flakes with 500mls of Methylated Spirits. Allow to stand overnight and strain before using. Produces a high gloss finish of great depth and brilliance unmatched by varnishes or lacquers.

Interior use only. Not resistant to heat or liquids.

For a more resistant finish, apply a coat of wax over the Shellac after 24 hours.

Timber and Wallboard Sealer: (Knotting) Mix 225gms of Shellac with 500mls of Methylated Spirits. Allow to stand overnight and strain before use.

Blocks out stains – water marks, knots & sap, smoke & soot, graffiti, grease, crayon.

Dries fast; lets you top coat in 45 minutes. Can be varnished or painted over.
