Spanner Use Instructions An essential part of any woodturners kit is a good chuck spanner. We see people use their knock-out bar, or even a chisel, between the chuck jaws to take a chuck off the lathe spindle. This plays havoc on the jaws and the adapter nut can become loose in the chuck body causing improper seating on the spindle. Or the adapter can be left behind on the lathe spindle. The chuck insert is designed to be permanently in the chuck and locked in with the grub screw provided.

Fitting the Chuck to a Lathe Align the chuck so that it starts on the spindle then with your free hand wind the hand wheel. Then lock the lathe spindle and, with the aid of your chuck spanner, nip the chuck up firmly to make sure the adapter is seated against the spindle. This is enough to prevent the chuck undoing. Failing to nip it up means there may be a tiny gap left between the lathe head and the chuck adapter. When the lathe is started, or when the chisel first cuts the wood, the chuck can snap up extremely tight.
