Description
Engraved Manaia carved in NZ from bone.
Complete with cord and a woven flax presentation case.
This carving is 75mm long 2.40A
This design brings together two main elements, the Manaia and the Koru. The top section is a Manaia which is one of the more ancient mythical beings with a bird's head and a human form. It is said to be the messenger between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of the spirits. The Manaia is regarded as a kind deity protecting the people and helping them communicate with ancestors on the other side. It is also a holder of great spiritual energy and is a guardian against evil. The Manaia can be seen blended into many Maori designs with subtle differences between tribes. Most Maori art tells the story of a tribe or event. The Manaia therefore has many forms as it is intertwined with other shapes and patterns to depict its different powers and its interaction with the spirit or mortal worlds. It is often used to symbolize the inner strength and spirituality. The spiral is a Koru, which is the fern frond as it opens bringing new life and purity to the world. It also represents peace, tranquillity and spirituality along with a strong sense of regrowth or new beginnings.
