Mount Algidus is an iconic station located in the Southern Alps, occupying the high country between two great rivers - the Rakaia & Wilberforce. Mount Algidus, a 53,000-acre cattle station is very much a working station, supporting 2,000 head of Aberdeen Angus cattle and a flock of 2,000 Romney cross-breed sheep. Much hard work and investment has gone into this farming enterprise since the owners bought the land 10 years ago.
In the 1940s Mount Algidus station was regarded as some of the wildest and roughest farming land in New Zealand and in 1963 was the inspiration for the bestselling book written by Mona Anderson, called ‘A River Rules My Life’. The Wilberforce River in all its moods governed her life for 33 years and she went on to write The Good Logs of Algidus, in 1965, Over the River in 1966 and The Wonderful World at My Doorstep in 1968.
Our wonderful live-in couple are moving on after five years of excellent service, so we require an experienced couple who will enjoy living on an isolated high country station. These roles will provide essential support to the owners, ensuring the appearance and maintenance of the buildings and surrounding areas and the management of the household to a high standard.
