Te Ora Hou Otautahi is seeking a qualified, experienced teacher for our Te Kaupapa Whakaora (TKW) Alternative Education programme in a fixed term position starting as soon as possible, with the fixed term position running through until the end of 2018. (The position may extend beyond 2018).

We need someone who fits with our culture and values, and so in order to find the right person, we are able to design the hours of the position to range from .4 FTE to 1 FTE.

Over the next nine months, we are seeking to implement “best practice”, capturing what students and whanau tell us works, especially for Maori. The successful applicant will play a key role in this process.

You will need to be innovative and motivated with excellent behavioural management, planning and teaching skills. You must have the ability to connect to young people and whanau with a good understanding of adolescent development and strengths-based approaches within an educational environment. You will also need to have passion for helping to create systemic change, and to help clearly identify and communicate what our students need in order to grow and thrive.

Your core task will be to oversee teaching curriculum and building capacity in small team of teaching and support staff to provide a challenging and holistic academic program for 22 students aged 13-16 who are no longer engaged in mainstream education. Students will be well supported by our youth and social workers to help ensure they develop not only in school, but through their whanau and community.

Outdoor Education and IT qualifications and experience are a bonus.

Te Ora Hou Otautahi is a christian, faith-based, kaupapa Maori educational and youth development service provider with over 25 years serving our local community. The successful applicant must be willing to subscribe the organisational values and philosophy.
