Serco has extended its portfolio in Asia Pacific with the Auckland South Corrections Facility (ASCF) in New Zealand opened in Wiri, South Auckland in 2015. It is a state of the art facility, operated on behalf of the NZ Department of Corrections, providing a safe and secure environment for over 900 prisoners.
About the role
Serco NZ is currently seeking a Cultural Liaison Officer (Pasifika) to provide sound cultural support, business support, advice and coordination of cultural initiatives and operations to enhance the quality of services for the rehabilitation and reintegration of Pasifika prisoners. This role reports to the Executive Cultural Manager.
This critical position will assist, mentor and coach prisoners with their case management plan, motivate and support prisoners to live pro-social lives.
The Cultural Liaison Officer must develop and maintain relationships internally and externally with Pasifika communities to contribute to the achievement of positive outcomes for Pasifika prisoners.
Key responsibilities
  • Work with prisoners to encourage and build relationships/connections with their family/fanau, Pasifika communities.
  • Initiate, organise and collaborate with internal Kohuora staff to increase awareness of staff knowledge of Pasifika culture to better monitor progress and provide additional support where required .
  • Provide weekly and quarterly reports detailing relationships amongst prisoners, perceived risks, incidents and areas of improvement with regard to Kohuora operations .
  • Establish and Develop specifically cultural activities for staff and prisoners within Fale Pasifika/Whare Manaaki e.g., Language, and Cultural activities.
  • Conduct scheduled checks of Kohuora site as directed by Executive Cultural Advisor.
  • Responsible for overseeing and ensuring that Fale Pasifika/Whare Manaaki is clean and tidy and rules are adhered to by all users of the facility.
  • Develop an annual Calendar of events incorporating language and cultural programmes in collaboration with staff and prisoners.
  • Contribute, facilitate and support the Pasifika staff network.
Qualifications
  • A relevant tertiary qualification is preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge in Pasifika Language & Cultural protocols and processes within Pasifika communities, and of Pasifika community structures and dynamics.
  • Fluent speaker of one or more Pacific languages.
Skills and Experience
  • Proven ability to motivate and encourage prisoners to live pro-social lifestyles.
  • Experience in working with prisoners is an advantage.
  • Effective facilitation and negotiation skills in an individual or group setting.
  • Proven communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical and report writing skills.
