WALSH Trust is a well-established and respected award winning provider of community mental health services. He Kakano Ora (Seeds for Life) provides support for mums and babies across the Waitemata and Auckland District Health Board regions. As a Maternal Mental Health Support Worker every day will be different as we do whatever it takes to help.

Our new respite facility is a six bed, purpose built house in West Auckland. Mums and their babies come to stay with us for short periods in order to improve their mental health and to maintain wellness. Similarly, we work with mums in their own homes and communities, walking alongside them in their recovery journey. The Strengths approach and belief in the Recovery model drives the way we work with people, so an understanding of these is vital.

This is a practical role that can include a range of tasks and duties. The night shifts can be busy and varied with the major focus on working to enable mothers to rest and providing care to young babies while mothers are sleeping. The role requires you to work awake shifts 11pm to 7.30am Tuesday to Friday (32 hours per week).

This job could be you if you:

  • Have experience and/or qualifications in mental health (National Certificate in Mental Health & Addictions or other relevant health related qualification)
  • Are comfortable with and have experience caring for babies (as well as older children)
  • Have an understanding of attachment and parent craft
  • Want to make a lasting, positive difference in the lives of mums and their whanau
  • Have the ability to work with diverse cultures
  • Are flexible, adaptable, competent, reliable, forward thinking and a team player
  • Can demonstrate initiative and problem solving skills
  • Are naturally encouraging and have a non-judgemental attitude
  • Can take responsibility for yourself
  • Have a passion and energy to contribute to the mental health sector
  • Have a full, current, clean New Zealand driver's licence

We have a diverse team of registered health professionals and mental health support workers, each bringing something different to the team. We currently have group programmes that include baby massage and craft.
