Following the recent resignation of a part-time surgeon returning to his homeland we are seeking an Orthopaedic Surgeon to join our team at Southland Hospital.

The Orthopaedic Department is currently staffed by five part-time and one full-time Surgeon. Our secondary Hospital proudly provides top-quality healthcare to a population of 105,000 in the lower South Island; this provides us with some unique challenges, but also ensures that there is an enormous scope for the variety in the work available to a talented professional. Being at the bottom of the country you might expect us to have small, outdated facilities; but we are proud of our state-of-the-art hospital which was newly constructed in 2004 and has PACS digital radiology, MRI, CT, and the iSOFT patient management system. The Service covers most Orthopaedic subspecialties, other than scoliosis surgery, and dedicates the entirety of Wednesday morning to teaching and case review.

We are seeking an orthopaedic surgeon who should have an interest and fellowship experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Spinal Surgery

The applicant should also be proficient in General Orthopaedics and trauma and the expected duties include the following:

  • Participation in a one in six on call roster
  • Supervision of acute operating lists
  • Fracture clinics
  • Elective operating and outpatient clinics
  • A rural clinic
  • Support and leadership of junior medical staff and administrative duties
  • Teaching of undergraduate medical students and registrars
  • An active role in interdisciplinary team education
  • Active support and utilise specialist nurse role/s as appropriate
  • Participation in quality improvement, clinical audit activities and service development meetings and initiatives

Applicants must have Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Orthopaedics or an equivalent qualification, enabling specialist (vocational) registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

The commencement date is negotiable but early availability is preferred. Remuneration and conditions will be based on your experience with the terms and conditions of the ASMS MECA.

For further details, to discuss the positions or to arrange a visit please contact out orthopaedic clinical lead Mr Charles Luecker.

Closing date: Thursday, 24 October 2019.

In your application letter please indicate clearly whether you would prefer full or part time hours.
