The latest addition to the Capital recordings family, and what a snotty tantrum throwing brat it is! With song titles like "Auckland is burning" and "Brat", this self titled mini album is unapologetically un-commercial and bristling with a punk rock attitude that is refreshing in a climate where so much emphasis is put on getting airplay. That’s not to say these songs couldn't get played on the radio- they can and have - but you can tell Die!Die!Die! couldn't give a toss if their songs are playlisted or not. Drummer Michael Prain and Bassist Henry Oliver form a singular rhythmic beast, laying a driving groove that Andrew Wilson spits shards of angular trebly guitar and acidic lines like "we change our lives with the change of a haircut" over. Barely a year old, this band has for sometime had the reputation of one of the country's best and most exciting live bands, and also one of the most hardworking; touring NZ five times and Australia three. They have also just returned from a jaunt in the U.S. where they played some shows and recorded their full length album with Steve Albini (Pixies, Nirvana and pretty much every indie band worth listening to). There are nods to Albini's bands Big Black and Shellac here (especially on "Shyness will get you nowhere") as well as to frequent gig buddies the Mint Chicks, but Die!Die!Die!'s sound is their own - caustic and obnoxious until it's almost painful but melodic and catchy enough to keep you listening. Excellent.
