Ned Collette is an unflappable young man who doubles as the creative logician behind experimental Melbourne sextet City City City. Intently rolling cigarettes outside a Brunswick cafe, the 26-year-old is confident, articulate and polite, but there's nothing inconsequential about his banter.

It's this considered, eloquent disposition that characterises his band's multilayered musical approach so well.
"I think more than anything, we're just really honest with each other," Collette says. "I think everyone feels comfortable offering their opinion, but in a really constructive way. So, I think it's probably just that trust in each other which has helped the songwriting really come along."
He is referring to City City City's sophomore long player The Perimeter Motor Show - an album that sees the group deftly negotiate far-reaching instrumental modes, from darkly filmic, almost Hitchcockian drifts, to crashing surf-rock, gently melodic and electronic psyche-pop, and angular Krautrock.

According to Collette, the album marks their real unity as a band.
Formed in 2001 after he finished a VCA improvisation course, City City City consisted of a rotating bunch of musicians, originally devised as an outlet for Collette's songwriting and guitar-based compositions.
"I guess I just started it as a quartet and it was kind of a free jazz thing," he explains. "It didn't really start feeling like a band until Joe Talia and Mick Meagher, our bass player, joined. And that was when it started to feel like it had a really solid core."

It wasn't until 2003, with the release of their expansive debut album Dawn and the Blue Light District that City City City began to function as a band, with Ben Bourke, Eamon McNelis and Rory McDougal joining Collette, Meagher and Talia in the permanent line-up.
