Roman Polanski's THE PIANIST tells the story of Wladislaw Szpilman, a Polish Jew and classical pianist who survived the horrors of the Warsaw Ghetto. This collection of music from the film is comprised almost exclusively of piano works by Frederic Chopin. His music was an essential part of Szpilman's repertoire and it played a crucial role in his life. As Polanski states, "For us Poles, Chopin symbolizes revolution...His music is our music - it's like mother's milk. It is what gave Szpilman strength and courage." Szpilman was performing the Nocturne in C-sharp Minor in a Warsaw radio station when the Nazis bombed the city, and in a critical scene late in the movie he plays the Ballade No. 1 in G Minor in the face of what he believes to be certain doom. In addition to these works, the album includes the Waltz No. 3 in A Minor, the Prelude in E Minor, and the Grande Polonaise, among others, all beautifully rendered by fellow countryman Janusz Olejniczak. A bonus comes in the form of the final track: a rare recording from 1948 by Szpilman himself of the Mazurka in A Minor. This thoughtfully conceived program eloquently pays homage to Szpilman's memory.
