First published in 1803 this is a facsimile reprint of the 1927 edition with music examples and a new Introduction by Seumas MacNeill.
Described as "the earliest authentic record of a piper's view of his music -- which has undoubtedly provided much source work for later preparations."

MacDonald’s Treatise is generally accepted as the first bagpipe tutor published for public use. It takes us “back a whole generation earlier than the oldest subsequent records. It represents the playing technique of men who lived before the ’45, when piobaireachd was still a flourishing culture and many of the finest compositions had been made within living memory.
