Alan Caiger-Smith (b. 1930) is a celebrated master potter, and the founder of Aldermaston Pottery, in Berkshire, England.

Caiger-Smith is known to produce “startling and sophisticated colour ranges of vivid, metallic luminosity”, and this piece is no exception. An abstracted geometric floral pattern and stunning gold glaze - the bowl truly shines. Caiger-Smith’s lustre bowls are very difficult to execute, and are perhaps his most sought after and collectable works - they often achieve a premium.

He has been described as a “20th-Century English cultural beacon”. Works of his are held extensively in public and private collections internationally - including several in the NGV, Melbourne.

This piece from the vast collection of extremely well regarded New Zealand potter Anneke Borren. Although it was noted to be from 1981 this may have been the purchase date, I've been told the date mark is from 1979.

“I once asked the late Robert Charleston, Keeper of Ceramics at the Victoria & Albert Museum, which of all the works in his care he himself most enjoyed. “Tin-glaze and lustre” he said, “they are warm- hearted and they come to meet you”. They do indeed come forward to introduce themselves by means of their colour and imagery; that’s why the forthright New Zealand potter William Newland used to call them ‘the softies’, while in his view the high-fired ceramics stood alongside, hard-nosed and aloof.” - Alan Caiger-Smith
