About potter Jan Cockell

JAN COCKELL born in Wanganui, New Zealand.

In 1971 I went to England on my OE. I met and married Chris Cockell, a cockney from London and we returned to live in New Zealand in 1972.

Potting history:

Mid 1970s: I took some classes and learned throwing and finishing techniques on the potters wheel. Chris built a small drum kiln to fire my pots which was lined with ceramic fibre and fuelled with Liquid Petroleum Gas and we fired to 1300C.

1978/79: Moved to the Waitakere Ranges in West Auckland and we set up a workshop/studio to continue this interest. In December 1979 we held our first Open Day, successfully selling our work to friends, family and neighbours. We went on to develop a range of stoneware domestic pots which were fired in our 2nd LPG kiln (the first one having fallen apart on after the firing prior to the Open Day)and we sold to craft galleries, at exhibitions and from our studio for the next 12 years.

Most off Jan works can be purchased at art & craft places around NZ priced from $70. to around $300

Other involvements:

1995: I joined Warkworth Craft Gallery and Albany Village Pottery co-operatives. I had enjoyed the co-operative philosophy and direct contact with the public, during the period Chris and I had been members of Pots of Ponsonby in 1981 when it first opened, although we left after four years involvement there, to give our growing children more attention. 1995: Elected onto the Executive Committee of Auckland Studio Potters.
