Description
Let Fly! captures the spirit of a young man embarking on his lifelong dream - a career as a pilot. In this accessible, pacey autobiography, Barry Cardno reveals a youthful zest for life and a keenness and enthusiasm for flying; the reader is right there with him in the cockpit, sharing his excitement. But we also witness his concerns and disillusionment with his employers, the loneliness and solitary nature of the work, and the constant danger inherent in topdressing in rural New Zealand. This is also an account of Barry's horrific topdressing accident, his disbelief at the shattering of his dream, and the difficulty and frustration of making a new life. We are caught up in the suspense of his rehabilitation, thwarted attempts to find a satisfactory resolution with the authorities, competitive skiing successes, and infuriating health setbacks. Barry describes those people who inspire him along the way, including his special relationship with members of Sir Archibald McIndoe's Guinea Pig Club - all seriously injured in flying accidents in World War Two. When Barry is eventually licensed to fly solo again, the reader cheers alongside him. A candid and courageous tale of shattered dreams and beating the odds. About the Author
Barry Cardno is a wheelchair-dependent paraplegic pilot who lives in Wanaka. He works as a freelance journalist, and likes to ski, travel and fly planes - and, in particular, to share the freedom and joy of flying with disabled and disadvantaged youth. To Barry, the wheelchair is a part of who he is, and his disability is not so much a handicap as a minor inconvenience. He hopes that his story might inspire others to aim high and not give up on their dreams.
