Airline history TEAL, NZNAC and formation of AIR NEW ZEALAND

Travellers on the huge jets that criss cross the skies far above the Pacific today seldom spare a thought for the pioneers - men and machines - of the days when flying was a real adventure; when routes were unplotted, landing places inadequate and equipment primitive, when set against the huge distances to be covered.

This book traces the development of the complicated network of routes; it tells of the men who faced constant and continuing prob- lems, exploring the islands by sea, surveying, measuring, testing and reporting.

It tells of the political tangles, interåçnational co-operation, personal aspirations, and many dangers that slowly worked together to bring about the Air New Zealand we know today. It includes one of the outstanding unsolved mysteries of the Pacific Ocean, the disappear- ance without trace of Amelia Earhart and offers a new theory on the events of her last hours.

The Author has exhaustively searched out historic photographs showing the flimsy machines and the men who flew them. He has meticulously traced the building of New Zealand's airline up to the merger of April 1978 which joined domestic and international services together to form one composite operation.

It is a story of which New Zealand can be proud.

Ian Driscoll has made his career in sea and air transport, serving with the Orient, Union- Castle and Union Lines; with Imperial Airways, the New Zealand National Airways Corporation and Air New Zealand.

In the 1930s his experience ranged from Australian and South African mail ships to 'Empire' flying-boats. He spent the duration of the Second World War at sea; has since served for more than 30 years in the New Zealand airline industry. Throughout he has written regularly, as a contributor, on public affairs
