Prologue: Afghanistan, July 1985

The noise came first, a slow thudding on the air. I leaped up, staring. Only one thing made that sound: whop, whop, whop, whop. All around me the Mujahideen were scattering, going to ground. Some- thing glinted in the harsh light. It was a Hind D, nose down and coming fast, smudge-brown against the blue sky. A second gunship reared up alongside the first. They had climbed vertically up behind the high ground to our right, catching us completely unawares. It was no more than a kilometre to the edge of the plateau. Already, they were close enough to open fire.

My brain raced while I stood like stone.

There were culverts and holes at the back of the plateau, natural trenches cut over the years by the spring melt-waters. These were my only chance. I turned, and ran as I'd never run before. There was a hollow rushing sound in the air. Looking back, I saw flashes from beneath the wings of the lead Hind. Immediately, the rockets smashed down into the dry ground, flinging great lumps of rock and earth high into the air.
